Steve Spencer
Western Kentucky

Steve Spencer has a great wife and two good kids.
He enjoys outdoor pursuits but does not do them enough.
He is good at a lot of activities but is master of only a few.
His contributions to his profession have been minimal, but he has maintained his sanity
… barely… and he will die before his home is paid off.
Additional information about Dr. Spencer:
Dr. Steve Spencer is a full professor in the Kinesiology, Recreation and Sport department at Western Kentucky University. He is the founder of the Outdoor Leadership Program at WKU, a 20+ year old program in experiential education. He has an extensive educational and professional background in outdoor recreation, environmental education, and leadership training. He is an experiential education advocate with over 20 years in trip-leading experience in back-country settings involving backpacking, whitewater canoeing, and camping.
Some of his qualifications include: American Canoe Association Instructor Trainer (level 4), Certified Outdoor Leader and trainer with the Wilderness Education Association, Leave No Trace Master Trainer, Project Wild, Project Wild Aquatic, Project Learning Tree, and Project Wet Trainer; KY Hunter Education Instructor Trainer, Bow Hunter instructor, and Wilderness First Responder co-instructor.
Dr. Spencer has been at WKU since 1990, when he and his wife Debby, graduated from the University of Arkansas (Go Hogs!). Debby is the President of We Make Things Happen, a company that works in tourism development http://www.wmthcorp.com/ and http://www.trailsrus.com/.
The Spencer’s have two great sons: Tyler is employed with the University of Kansas handling Sport Clubs. Beau is in the U.S. Air Force and is currently living in Washington, D.C.
Prior to completing his doctoral studies at Arkansas, Dr. Spencer spent 12 years coaching football in colleges and high school. He is an avid canoeist and has been an ACA instructor since 1982. Recently, he has developed the Warren County Blueways a computerized interactive mapping system of waterways in the vicinity of WKU. This project continues to be managed by WKU students in the Outdoor Leadership Program.
