Andy began his love for the outdoors in Boy Scouts where he excelled and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. That exposure as a youth drove him to want to pursue a degree in Outdoor Recreation Management. After spending a few summers working at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, Andy obtained an associates degree in Eco-Tourism and Adventure Travel at Hocking College and then earned a bachelors degree in Conservation Social Sciences at the University of Idaho.
Experience in the Outdoor Industry
Professionally Andy spent most of his early career in the field of experiential education, working for the Ohio Civilian Conservation Corps, Boy Scouts of America and the Washington State University (WSU) Challenge Program. While at WSU, Andy also lead outdoor recreation trips to western destinations like Moab, Utah and the Havasupai Indian Reservation in the Grand Canyon.
Working With Five Rivers Outdoors
Andy got married to his wife Joni in June of 2006 and they decided to move back to the Midwest to be closer to their families. Luckily, Andy found an opportunity to continue on his career path in Outdoor Recreation and Education with the Five Rivers Outdoors, the Outdoor Recreation Department of Five Rivers MetroParks in Dayton, Ohio. Andy is the Five Rivers MetroParks Outdoor Recreation Assistant Manager, managing the core program staff, coordinating trips, courses, and clinics teaching paddling, backpacking, fly fishing, cycling and mountain biking to inspire the region to "Get out and Live." Beyond managing the core program, Andy contributes to the agency by assisting in the management and facilitation of numerous outdoor special events such as Gearfest and The Adventure Summit, as well as being a recognized sustainable trail building instructor and consultant in Ohio Parks and Recreation.
Andy also spends a lot of time on two wheels, whether mountain biking out at MoMBA and other trails in the region, commuting to work or just getting some exercise on the recreation trails, he is a devoted advocate for the sport of cycling and strives to continue to make the Miami Valley a more bike friendly community. As an League Cycling Instructor, Andy works to teach others skills and knowledge to make them more competent cyclists while out riding on the roadways.
