I am truly honored to be selected to represent the student members of the AORE for the next year. This is a position I have had my eye on for the past few years and now feel like I have the experience, the knowledge, and the time to fill its duties. I cannot tell you how excited I am for this opportunity to give back to the association that has been giving me so much over the past four years. I have attended the last four conferences, debuting in beautiful San Diego as a student scholarship winner. I served my first year on the Climbing Committee and this year will mark my third year with the Student Development Committee. This past conference I was fortunate enough to present on a topic that has close personal value to me, and to facilitate a student round table at another session. I am currently a Graduate Assistant for Outdoor Programs while pursuing my Masters Degree in Recreation and Sport Management at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. There I oversee a rental center, bike shop, trips program, climbing gym, educational and technical clinics, and special events.
I earned my Bachelor Degree in Exercise Science from Towson University in my hometown, Baltimore, Maryland in December of 2010. I began my outdoor career with Towson’s outdoor program, Adventure Pursuits, as a volunteer trip leader and rental center supervisor in the fall of 2005. Through my wonderful five and a half years I held 16 different positions, including challenge course facilitator, various clinic instructor roles, route setter, and many others in an attempt to round out my experience and work my way up to Climbing Gym Manager. Adventure Pursuits added the appreciation for student development to my existing passion for the outdoors and guiding trips. I spent the semester after my undergraduate program working as the professional intern for Rice University’s Outdoor Program in Houston before moving on to my current position at the University of Tennessee.
As a student and outdoor enthusiast myself, I am excited to represent the student members of the Association and look forward to being their voice at the table!
