In February, the AORE signed the updated Wilderness First Aid Scope of Practices, which serves to, “… assist the lay public, outdoor program administrators, and other consumers of wilderness medicine courses in their choice of an appropriate course and credential for their programs.” This updated Scope is an outcome of countless discussions and the collaborative efforts of many, including the AORE’s 2009 conference Wilderness Medicine Roundtable.

Association Awards
The Jim Rennie Leadership Award sponsored by Osprey recognizes contributions to AORE which are far beyond the ordinary and which have had a significant and lasting impact on the Association and its mission. The award also recognizes professional work or leadership of unusual significance in the field of outdoor recreation and education. The nominee must be a current AORE professional member in good standing.
The Bill March Student Achievement Award sponsored by Osprey is presented to an individual who makes outstanding contributions to an outdoor recreation and education program while pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree. The nominee must be a current AORE student member in good standing.
The David J Webb Program Excellence Award sponsored by Marmothonors an outstanding non-profit outdoor program which has provided dynamic and innovative services to its participants, demonstrated professionalism and high standards of conduct, and contributed to the outdoor community at large by sharing information and assisting other programs. The nominee must be a current organization member in good standing.

Student Scholarship
The Student Literary Award recognizes students with excellent writing skills. Two awards are given annually; one to an undergraduate student and one to a graduate student. The award winners will receive a scholarship to attend the annual AORE Conference and a scholarship to attend the Student Development Workshop offered during the pre-conference sessions. Winning and other selected manuscripts may be included in the edited papers of the AORE Conference on Outdoor Recreation and Education. Award winners are expected to present their paper at the AORE conference.
This year multiple organizations have expressed their support of AORE and its membership and are offering scholarships for professional skill development to student and professional members of the Association. We would like to thank the following organizations for supplying these excellent opportunities for our members:
American Alpine Institute
Professional or Student Members
· Four $750 scholarships for Alpine Mountaineering and Technical Leadership Part I or II Courses or to our Alpinism I or II Courses
American Mountain Guides Association
Professional or Student Members
· One scholarship for a Single Pitch Instructor Course
· One scholarship for a Climbing Wall Instructor Course/Exam
Landmark Learning
Professional or Student Members
· One scholarship for a Leave No Trace Master Educator Course
Wilderness Medical Associates
Professional or Student Members
· One scholarship for $150 off any WMA course three days or longer in length
Wilderness Medical Training Center
Professional or Student Members
· One scholarship for a standard Wilderness First Aid course (may be used for recertification)
Professional Climbing Instructors Association
Student Members Only
· One scholarship for a Base Managed Climbing Instructor Course
· One scholarship for a Climbing Wall Instructor Course
All scholarship applicants must be current members of the AORE and over the age of 18. Scholarships are for tuition only. Winners are responsible for travel to the course site. Winners must enroll in and participate in the course during the 2013 calendar year. Any scholarship funds not utilized by December 31, 2013 will be forfeited. Scholarship funds are non-transferrable.
