In February, the AORE signed the updated Wilderness First Aid Scope of Practices, which serves to, “… assist the lay public, outdoor program administrators, and other consumers of wilderness medicine courses in their choice of an appropriate course and credential for their programs.” This updated Scope is an outcome of countless discussions and the collaborative efforts of many, including the AORE’s 2009 conference Wilderness Medicine Roundtable.

2013 Conference Presentation Tracks
The following seven conference tracks helped to frame the structure of AORE's 2013 conference presentations. The intent of the tracks is to help attendees organize presentations they wish to attend in a meaningful way.
Management and Adminstration
This track is designed to help professionals develop procedures, operations, and overall administration of programs. Presentation topics include staff development, marketing, technology, budgeting, and institutional support. Other areas include running various aspects of the business of outdoor programs including rental center operations.
Risk Management and Wilderness Medicine
This track is intended to improve preparedness for crisis and medical situations and provide updates in the wilderness medicine field. Presentation topics include writing risk management plans, revising policies and procedures, legal advice, and updates to wilderness medicine.
Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability
This track provides meaningful instruction and discussion pertaining to outdoor ethics, minimizing carbon emissions/footprint, and conservation.
Programming
This track is designed for all aspects of running outdoor trips or clinics, events, and programming for participants. Presentations include topics ranging from logistical planning and permitting to technical skills and backcountry cooking. This track also includes presentations on specific types of trips such as international trips and orientation programs.
Climbing Wall and Challenge Course
Large activity structures pose particular challenges for operation, maintenance, risk management, and programming. Presentation topics include climbing wall competitions, challenge course development, and staff training in both of these areas.
Student Development
Designed specifically for student attendees, this track is aimed at improving leadership, communication, and programming awareness. Presentations by students are strongly encouraged in this track, though they can be placed in other tracks as well.
Career Development
Anyone looking for a job in the outdoor industry, or advice on career advancement, should pay special attention to this track. Presentations will relate to resumes, interviews, graduate schools, field work, military positions,and additional career development advice.
Research Symposium
While not an official conference track, the Research Symposium includes presentations about research from practitioners, students, and academics. Presentations in this area are selected separately through the Research and Publications Committee designed for the symposium.
