AORE and G Adventures intend to build upon our 2016 successes and further expand the programming to cultivate a collaborative working environment for AORE professionals their direct supervisors. In addition to the original program outcomes, the 2018 emphasis will further develop networking, program evaluation and assessment, and organizational development opportunities between collegiate outdoor educators and their direct supervisors.
This program will be limited to seven (7) teams of outdoor educators and direct supervisors will have the opportunity to represent their institution and interface and collaborate with other university teams to examine and compare programs and to explore trends impacting higher education, collegiate recreation and the outdoor industry. These outcomes include:
AORE members will have dedicated and field based time with their direct supervisor.
AORE members will have the opportunity to engage their direct supervisor in a program evaluation and SWOT analysis.
AORE members will have the opportunity to engage their direct supervisor in exploring current trends in higher education, collegiate recreation and the outdoor industry, and look at the impact these trends are having on their institutions strategic planning and visioning.
AORE members will have opportunities to showcase current and discuss perspective opportunities for global programming at their institution
Participants will have the opportunity to collectively process a SWOT analysis of the current and future state of collegiate outdoor recreation and education.
Participants will engage, formally and informally, in facilitated dialogs related to the future of outdoor recreation and education in collegiate recreation
Participants will contribute to expanding the depth, breadth and knowledge of outdoor education and recreation in the US.
You should apply if you meet all of these requirements:
One current AORE Professional or Organization membership per team is required. AORE Organization Members will have priority.
Your direct supervisor must be able to participate. This administrator must be a part of the department’s administrative leadership and could be an Associate Director, Director or Dean.
You have professionally contributed to AORE through involvement on a Committee, Board of Directors, Host, Task Force, etc.
You are involved in the outdoor recreation and education industry. This can be accomplished by annually attending industry conferences, including the AORE conference, maintaining certifications and participating in trainings, contributing to industry discussions, writing for the JOREL, etc.
Your campus/organization has hosted international trips in the past, OR, you are eager to build an international trip portfolio.
Your organization has no moratorium on international travel.
You are a full-time employee of your organization and provide functional leadership of outdoor programming.
Enrollment in this program will cost $250 per person.
Participants will be required to cover the travel costs to and from the program and most meals.
Participation in pre and post program work and meetings are required.
With our without reasonable accommodations, participants must be able to self-navigate difficult and varying terrain in the mountain, wilderness and high altitude environments. Participants will lift and carry heavy loads that may exceed 50 pounds over difficult, challenging and strenuous terrain. Participants must be able to walk and hike distances carrying heavy loads. Physical conditioning and a healthy mental attitude are necessary components of this experience.
G Adventures requires Travel Medical Insurance. The minimum insurance policy coverage for medical emergency evaluation and repatriation is $200,000. Adding cancellation insurance is optional and recommended.

Articulate your department’s trip portfolio with attention on international adventure. If you have not embarked on international adventure, please provide your vision on proposed international trips and how it relates to your organization’s success.
Support by your immediate supervisor noting the dates of travel away from work and your organization’s overall support of global adventure learning.
The Application Deadline is at midnight January 12th PST. All applications must be submitted on or before that day.
After the application deadline a selection committee made up of AORE and G Adventure Representatives will meet, score each application, and invite up to 7 AORE cohort members for participation.
AORE and G Adventures are both dedicated to diversity and inclusion and are committed to increasing the numbers of underrepresented minorities in the field of outdoor recreation and education. We will work to ensure that our selection procedures consciously identify and evaluate people from underrepresented groups. We will also strive to remove sources of unconscious bias, and will seek to correct situations where full and open exchange of ideas has been limited.

5 points = Exceeds criteria expectations
3 points = Adequately addresses most criteria
1 point = Does not adequately address criteria
Applicant has submitted their current resume.
Applicant articulates why their team is interested in attending.
Applicant clearly articulates three goals for experience.
Applicant articulates how this program will benefit their department.
Applicant has a current AORE Organization or Professional Membership that extends past Jan 31, 2018.
Applicant has made significant contributions to the Association.
Applicant is involved in the industry by attending conferences, maintaining certifications, presents knowledge at conferences or JOREL.
Applicant's immediate supervisor approves of the travel dates and willingness to embark on program international travel.
Applicant's organization has hosted international trips in the past or is eager to build an international multi-sport trip portfolio.
Applicant is a full-time employee of said organization and their role determines program offerings.
Applicant articulates the importance of global outdoor learning.
Applicant articulates why they believe there is a benefit or deficit of utilizing a commercial group adventure travel provider.
Applicant has minimum mandatory medical travel insurance coverage.
Applicant articulates their willingness to participate knowing the physical requirements and high altitude warning.
